„The justice system’s unequal treatment of minority defendants and victims can have adverse effects not only on individuals, families, and communities, but on future generations as well. Using data from 100 years of trials at London’s Old Bailey criminal court, this column examines the processing of Irish defendants and victims by English juries during the 19th century. Disparate treatment is first visible in the 1830s and persists through the end of the century, intensifying in the wake of the mass Irish migration to London triggered by the potato famine.“
